Hey there, I'm a welder/fabricator. I make all kinds of things, I work with steel, stainless steel, aluminum, bronze, copper and brass. Pretty much if it's metal, I will try to find a way to weld it. I'm also an artist, I paint on metal (check out my website http://www.aforgedpainting.com) and sometimes I make furniture. None of these skills apply directly to roller derby, but I was thinking that I could probably do something like make display racks for merchandise... Just a thought.

I am a medical office manager- funny enough, I actually got this job on merit of the skills I gained from Facilities/ Admin with the league. I am also a fully qualified silversmith and glass artist.

I make a living as an artist who mostly makes interactive objects and installations. I've picked up a random skill set along the way as a result of having to figure out how to make the projects I envision: things like graphic design and photoshopping, basic construction techniques, computer programming, a bit of web coding, etc. But the thing that I enjoy most about my work these days is building electronics. I've learned bits of electronic theory from the experts I've worked with, and really get a kick out of building circuits, plugging them in, troubleshooting after they explode the first few times, and finally getting them working. It feels like magic. http://www.germainekoh.comI've toyed with the idea of offering to make an electronic penalty tracking board for the league. I wonder if that would be of interest. (And maybe I can program it so that only half my penalties ever show up on it!)

(And maybe I can program it so that only half my penalties ever show up on it!) P1 also made the popular IPhone "how to play derby" ap. I wonder how much room there is in the derby world for backend programming applications. For example, an easy-to-use program that shows a players stats, awards and acheivements on the website. The program makes it easy to input the data at games, and after every game this info is added to the site. Tho it sounds difficult, my friend recently built a program that does just this, for paintball. He sells the software to paintball fields, and the system acts as a loyalty building feature... and works well. When I go home from a game, my stats are all updated and it is really fun to check out. It also creates a dynamic graphic that shows my stats, that I can use for my signature graphic on forums. Awesome. Could work well for derby. You can see an example of a player page here: http://www.tacticalpaintballgames.ca/PlayerDetail.php?playerid=1D0A44086BED487685F710ACBBAE32D6I actually designed the website front end, and you can see that here (you'll see me as the featured player... woot!): A software package could be developed from home, and then sold and distributed to leagues all over the world. The dynamic duo of P1 and Quad could do this easy!

If there were enough non-skating officials to have someone staffing a stats application during each game, I think it would be totally feasible to develop a database that could extract and supply publicly useful stats in close to real time. Maybe we (I?) should be the ones to develop that program. That was the kind of thinking that brought about the iPhone app. Thanks for starting this thread, ZombieBoy.

In regards to a stats app:
I hate coding but I can make some lovely wireframes/logic to go along with it if we do go down the lines of building one....

When I was with my ex, I did some of the coding for his website (the more complicated stuff) and I used to have to get up every fifteen minutes, go outside and swear my head off, them come back inside. I won't do it anymore. Hell, I won't even do tech support for the family anymore (my mom is the worst offender) because they don't LISTEN when I fix their fuckups for the eleventy billionth time and they get their computers all buggered up with crapware. I tell 'em to spend good money on a GOOD antivirus, none of this free AVG crap but nope. And my sister is anti-vax. Big surprise there. No surprise that she won't pony up for a GOOD anti-virus on her computer.

The derby stats software project sound like fun. Perhaps we will start a new thread in order to discuss the validity and do-ability of such a project? In the interest of keeping this thread on track, I'll open up a thread regarding the stats software in the Roller Derby Chat section.
Great to see such abundant resources among the local derby scene. Great start to the thread.

I've worked in videogames for the last 10 years in a variety of roles. I've managed technology and creative and specialize in figuring out weird or new things.
Working in videogames was a childhood dream, so I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing! Even outside of work I'm always tinkering on a personal project or two (or seven). I participate in 48hr game making competitions and enjoy coding and designing Flash games.

(And maybe I can program it so that only half my penalties ever show up on it!) We should chat. I'd love to be part of building an easy-to-use board that displays the minors of each skater to the benches, refs, announcers. It has to be clear enough to replace the inside whiteboard (the same info in 2 places adds confusion to already overwhelmed refs), dead simple to operate quickly and under stress, and very quick to make changes when errors are made or when a skater takes her 4th minor. Otherwise, it won't be up-to-date and it will be useless.

Oooo. If you do think about moving ahead with that idea, P1, keep me posted. The penalty board falls under my jurisdiction this year and anything we can do to make it interesting will definitely be entertained.
I wonder what the best interface would be for on the fly updating that doesn't involve a laptop being in the line of fire.

Let's take this to another thread... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10343
