What do you do for a living? The thread title is a bit misleading, as it actually pertains to how your job or skill could benefit the derby scene, if possible. Do you have a job, unique talent or a connection that could help out the derby group in some way? Let me explain....

This thread operates on the three following assumptions.

- Almost everyone involved with roller derby has a job, is a student or has a talent.

- Almost everyone in derby has access to a unique product or service made available by their job or talent.

- Almost everyone in derby is more than happy to offer this unique product or service in order to to help out their derby league in some way (within reason).

For example: I personally do a little graphic design, and have a background in running a small business. When asked to help out with graphics for the 4th team I was happy to help. The team got some graphics, and I got to help out. The cost is free. Everyone is happy.

If you are indeed willing to help out your derby league with resources made available to you by your talents, employment or connections, then please post that information here. Even something as simple as "I make delicious cookies" is helpful, so long as you are willing to contribute to a bake sale for example. (*eyes up Cookie Robster!)

This is different than the committees. The goal is to populate a list of donate-able skills, services or products that you can offer to the league in an extra-curricular sort of way, for the benefit of the league.

Even if you don't think your job or talent would be helpful, go ahead and post it if you are willing to use it order to help out however you can. You never know.

I will get things started.

My name is Jeremy. I recently created a small business and then sold it, which basically makes me a bum with too much spare time. I have tattooed for the past 16 years. I have experience in web design, graphic design, sculpting, marketing, branding, coaching focus groups, and operating a small business.

If need be I could draw up logos or print media for the derby group. I could do web design or event posters or merch concepts. I could even donate a tattoo as a raffle prize or for a promotion. Whatever it is, I'm just glad to help out.

My name is Marie. I work with cars, in the parts department.

Since I started skating, I figured out that brake cleaner and white lithium grease are great ways to clean my bearings and keep them lubed up a bit. Silicone spray also works great too. I also have infinite tools available and figured out a long time ago how to install skate bearings without a bearing tool or bearing press. Easy peasy 8) Since I work in the car industry at a dealer, I'm always willing to help out other derby girls who are on a budget but need car repairs with my staff prices (cost plus 10, baby!) and I can make sure our good techs who I trust and know will do a good job will work on their cars.

I work at a Chrysler dealership but that doesn't mean we don't work on other cars. The service manager doesn't like the techs "moonlighting" but they do it anyways  Hey, we all have to feed ourselves, right?

Anyhooter, if any of you need car repairs and can't find a good mechanic, feel free to ask me. If you don't want to come to my shop, that's cool, I do know a lot of good independent shops around and can give good recommendations.

Stay away from chain shops like Midas, Fountain Tire and the like. If you have transmission problems, stay FAR FAR away from AAMCO. We call them SCAAMCO for a reason! We have a good trans tech at my shop who is my buddy and chances are if you have trans problems, I can talk him into taking a quick boo at it for a bottle of whiskey or something. A lot of automotive people work for trade too. I've gotten so many car repairs done over the years for a bottle, in fact, that's how I got my winter steelies for my car. A 40 of Canadian Club whiskey!

Feel free to pick my mind for automotive advice too. I've been in the parts and service industry since, well, 1991. I'm not a licensed mechanic (carpal tunnel) but I was offered an apprenticeship when I worked for Acura.

I just don't want to see people get scammed when it comes to mechanical/bodyshop repairs and unfortunately this industry still has a bad rep when it comes to women getting ripped off. And that sucks. I still get hassled by some men because they can't possibly comprehend a girl behind the parts counter actually knowing what a Dana 44 differential with a 3.92 gear ratio actually is and that it comes in a number of Jeeps.

I love cars and roller derby Image

Hi all...

My name's Nik, moved here to Van 2 yrs ago from the UK and have just started skating and ref training...just gotta get involved

I have been in traditional and digital marketing strategy and execution for the past 14 yrs. In the past 2 years I have been a startegy and creative director focusing on web sites and social media. What does that mean?

The strategic execution of email, direct mail, social media posting and following building, building web applications and bascially taking brands like Microsoft, Dell, Electronica Arts and British Airways from being kinda popular to being amazing brands online and generating $$$

<I have won some awards so that is nice>

:)

What can I bring? Stratgic advice on communications strategy, traffic generation for terminalcityrollergirls.com, building the TCRG brand locally, across BC and also across Canada, extending the promotion of bouts and other events through social media channels (I know this is done now but I can add some more thinking)...

Happy to get involved.

I appreciate that Snatchy. Thanks for letting me help out. 4th team!

Keep those jobs, talents and connections coming! Even if you know a person who is willing to help, go ahead and promote them here. If your widow or partner is willing to help out, go ahead and post it here. (Cookie Robster!)

I'm "just a ref". My work skills are of no value to anyone but my employer. Sad but true.

What I have studied intensely and have great passion for, though, is training puppies and re-training adult dogs of all breeds. Those who've seen my dog compete before I left for Switzerland can probably confirm that. If anyone EVER has ANY kind of questions or needs around dog training or dog behavioural problems, there's a good chance I can help. And since this is my passion and not my career, my advice and time is free to league members.

And when my wife "Swiss Army Wife" gets into town (assuming she makes it through fresh meat), she speaks 5 languages and has a bunch of other skills that will come in VERY handy for the league.

Hello all,

Gunsweat here. I'm the Head Referee for TCRG.

My career at this point in time is in Customer Service / Sales for the Beauty industry: in particular, skin care.
I am a makeup artist as well & specialize in beauty, special fx, prosthetic application & fabrication and airbrush work.
Need me for a photoshoot? let me know! Film work? I'm into that too!

I have an extensive background in theatre too; I worked in this industry until about 4 years ago as an actor, director and writer.

Hi, I'm Law & Whore-der.

I've been a legal secretary (litigation) for 13 years. If you get into a car accident, I can hook you up. If you land in jail.....don't call me.

Hey Law, does any part of your job or office cover entertainment law or copyright law, or other specific law practices? Have you read over legal documents?

I am an RN currently working as a care aid for people with varying special needs/ medical conditions....need info about autism, kidney failure, epilepsy, diabetes, mood disorders or need to learn sign language, I can help.
Unfortunately, I don't have too many skills that are worthy to the league, but I have some skilled family member that do graphics, signage, car wraps the like.

Crash Test Ref! Do you rehabilitate chihuahuas who think they're T-Rexes?

I'm a hairdresser. Well, I'm actually more of a hairmesser. I specialize in natural and synthetic dreadlocks and extensions. Don't know how that'll benefit the league per se, but anyone interested can check out www.scissorninja.blogspot.com to see what the hell i'm talking about.

I'm trying to think of other stuff I can offer, but mostly I just make people pretty. Pretty badass, but still pretty.
