Help the All-Stars!

It's a big roller derby world, and Vancouver belongs in the thick of it! The only way to build our city's reputation in this game is by competition, pure and simple. The All-Stars are TCRG's travel team, a pack of top Vancouver derby athletes ready to go forth and explore strange, new tracks across the continent. But travel ain't cheap, and TCRG is 100% non-profit. Getting a roster of skaters and support staff to games can only be achieved through fundraising and community support. Please help send TCRG's travel team to kick some ass in far off lands!

Fresh Meat Diary #1: Try Outs

Submitted by web_com on Mon, 11/02/2009 - 07:03

by Roxy Hart, Team Fresh Meat

My journey into roller derby began with a story in the 24 Hours newspaper. After reading the write up, I went online and bought tickets to my first roller derby bout.

As soon as I walked into the arena, I was sold. Strong, fit women, skating and having fun together, an exciting, energy-filled arena, awesome fans - what more could a girl want?

I talked to a few people and found out about Fresh Meat tryouts. Excited, I found gear online and put on skates for the first time in many years. Wobbling and weaving, I set out. Using muscles I had forgotten existed, I skated, skated, and skated some more. Practicing the list of skating skills that we would need to complete at tryouts, I did crossovers, plow and t-stops, one foot glides and tried to ignore my burning quads as I squatted in skating posture. The dates were announced, the pressure was on, tryouts were right around the corner.

The day arrived with a lot of nerves, a little panic and a whole lot of excitement. I arrived early, eager to gear up and face the music. The TCRG girls were awesome, trying to help us relax and just have fun. We skated, did the best we could, and went home to wait for the email that would seal our fate.

About 10 days later - which to me seemed like 10 years - the email arrived. Holding my breath, I opened it and found Dek_Her announcing that I had made it onto Team Fresh Meat. Wow, what a feeling! My life as a roller derby girl had begun. On to Fresh Meat Boot Camp!
